The Minister of Fisheries, Alitia Bainivalu, has made a significant contribution to the women of the Nasomo Ra Marama cooperative in Somosomo, Taveuni, by providing them with a boat and fiberglass permits to support their sea cucumber business. This initiative is designed to enhance the women’s capacity to engage in the sea cucumber industry more effectively.

On a recent Saturday, the minister officially handed over the boat and permits to the cooperative members, which is expected to boost their entrepreneurial efforts in fishing for sea cucumbers. The initiative aims to provide these women with greater opportunities to enhance their sea cucumber business, ultimately contributing to improved livelihoods in the community.

Bainivalu expressed gratitude towards both the government for its support in facilitating this important initiative and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) for their ongoing commitment to enhancing local businesses through training and resource provision.

Claude Prevost, a local sea cucumber business operator, highlighted the positive impact of the program by noting that the cooperative’s efforts in fishing are set to open up more labor opportunities ahead. The expressions of appreciation extend to the cooperative members for their dedication and hard work in improving the local economy.

Furthermore, the minister emphasized the importance of collaboration and commitment among stakeholders in order to maximize the benefits of this initiative. She reassured the women that maintaining the government resources used in their business ventures is crucial for sustainable practices that ultimately lead to financial stability.

In conclusion, this initiative reflects a promising commitment to community development and empowering women in Taveuni’s fishing industry, fostering hope for a more robust and sustainable local economy. Through unity and diligent efforts, the women involved are set to generate significant economic opportunities that could benefit their families and the wider community.
