A local entrepreneur is showcasing the potential of handmade businesses in today’s market. Iowana Salusalu, who operates a business called Wananavu Earrings, exemplifies the growth that can be achieved through artisanal work. Based in Qelekuro, Tailevu, she has successfully built her venture with the help of her six children.
Her business is located near the shores of Natovi, where her products can be seen in various marketplaces. Salusalu has worked in multiple hotels for the past 20 years but sought to establish her own business following the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, she began creating her jewelry and has since recognized the importance of retaining local production.
Salusalu emphasizes that her designs often feature materials sourced from VATU, which allows her to create unique pieces like earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Recently, she has partnered with her daughter to enhance their production efforts.
The local community has shown a growing interest in her products, frequently visiting her shop to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship on display. “If we can earn $2 a day, it significantly impacts our family finances over a week,” Salusalu noted.
She reports high demand for her products, particularly from international clients, as well as tourists. Furthermore, women in surrounding villages are eager to gain skills by learning from her, wishing to enhance their own small businesses.
Her jewelry ranges in price from $2 to $4, and multi-item sets can reach up to $55. On busy days, her earnings may fluctuate between $200 and $400.
Through her efforts, Salusalu has made significant strides in sustaining her business and supporting her children’s education. She encourages community members to be proactive in their pursuits and to refrain from looking back once they decide to move forward.
The local entrepreneur’s success illustrates the potential for growth within handmade businesses in the region.
