Women in the village of Lawai have been increasingly active in pottery-making, utilizing traditional skills to generate income. Many of them have moved away from seeking other forms of employment to focus on crafting pottery, turning the fertile land around them into a source of livelihood.
The Naboumasi-masi Pottery Club, led by Makelesi Adivugalei, has become a focal point for these women. Traditionally, they gathered outside to work, lacking dedicated spaces. The club was established in Lawai in 1979, creating a supportive environment for women engaged in this artisanal craft.
One notable member is a woman from Tailevu who also married into Lawai and has been instrumental in establishing facilities for crafting pottery. As the women started to gain recognition for their work, they began supplying local hotels in the Sigatoka area.
In the past, they had to work in small huts, but today they have a large workshop where they create pottery and also host visitors to showcase their skills. Currently, the club consists of 22 active members.
Old and young alike are involved in this initiative, with some of the elder members in their seventies. Lawai is well-known for its pottery, noted for the quality clay available nearby.
Makelesi explains that various clay types are used in their creations, including lightweight clay used for items like vases and decorative pieces. The women have expanded their offerings to include a wide range of products, showcasing their craftsmanship to local and tourist customers.
Through their efforts, they aim to create sustainable income sources for their families and communities, enhancing both their local economy and their self-sufficiency.
Makelesi has encouraged the women to maintain their pottery-making as it not only preserves their culture but also strengthens their social bonds. She emphasizes that without consistent effort, achieving success in their craft would be challenging.
The women collect money together every month, which goes towards various community and religious causes, as well as to support their collective growth and future projects. This collaboration highlights the impact they have on their families and the local area.
Makelesi also urges the government to support initiatives that empower women within their communities, helping them further their skills and potential for economic contributions. She encourages young people to pursue education vigorously as it serves as a foundation for financial independence.
