Empowering Women: The Urgent Need for Online Safety Investments

Government action is needed to bolster the Online Safety Commission, according to John Apted, a litigation partner at Munroe Ley Lawyers. He raised this concern during the discussion on ‘Breaking Barriers: Increasing Female Participation in Local Government Elections in Fiji’ held at Tanoa Plaza on Tuesday night.

Among the key topics addressed, Mr. Apted emphasized that social media represents a significant barrier for women seeking to enter politics. He stated, “The media is much less powerful now than it used to be; the reality is the action is all on social media.” He further noted that social media in Fiji can be particularly harsh, often targeting women and the LGBTQ+ community with cruelty and negativity.

Mr. Apted pointed out the prevalence of platforms like Chat Fiji, which often circulate private and intimate images without consent, creating a hostile environment that discourages women from entering political spheres. Despite existing legislation aimed at holding individuals accountable for harmful online behavior, he criticized the lack of government funding to enforce these laws effectively.

“There needs to be investment in Online Safety concerning budget allocation, staffing, and public awareness,” he said, indicating the urgent need for improvements to make the environment safer for women in public life.

He urged women to voice their concerns to the government and advocate for increased investment in online safety measures, emphasizing that such steps are essential to empower them in the political arena.
