President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere announced that there are 5,500 registered women engaged in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) while addressing the 14th South Pacific Business Development Foundation Day and the Businesswoman of the Year Awards 2024 at Vodafone Arena.
He added that this figure includes 18,742 self-employed women and 4,650 women working in handicrafts. Elena Tinai from Saru Centre in Lautoka received the SPBD Businesswoman of the Year award for her significant contributions.
Ratu Wiliame emphasized the holistic approach of women-led enterprises, which focus on sustainable livelihoods, tackling social issues, and nurturing future generations. He noted that these businesses represent approximately 82 percent of registered enterprises in Fiji, underlining their importance in the country’s economic framework.
With more than 30,000 registered MSMEs, the sector is recognized as the backbone of Fiji’s economy, promoting growth, encouraging innovation, and supporting diversification, especially in rural regions.
