Empowering Women: The Rise of Wananavu Earrings

A local entrepreneur is making significant strides in her handmade jewelry business, despite ongoing challenges. Iowana Salusalu, who operates a business known as Wananavu Earrings from Qelekuro, Tailevu, is focusing on her craft alongside her six children.

Her business location near Natovi offers scenic views of the waterfront where she crafts beautiful pieces. For the past 20 years, Salusalu has also been employed at various hotels, including Shangri-La, but decided to launch her own venture in 2019, particularly during the pandemic.

Salusalu has gained a reputation for her unique earrings made from local materials and currently operates with her daughter to expand the business. She highlights that many community members are drawn to her store, captivated by the beauty and uniqueness of her jewelry.

“Should we achieve sales of $2 a day, it would mean a substantial amount for us, potentially leading to significant income within a week,” she stated, revealing her aspirations for growth.

Additionally, she indicated that there is a substantial demand from women in surrounding villages keen to learn how to establish their small businesses. Salusalu mentioned her products, including earrings and other items, are priced between $2 to $55.

By enhancing her business model and practices, Salusalu continues to lead her enterprise with the hope of inspiring others in her community to pursue their entrepreneurial aspirations as well.
