In Kavewa, Nadogo, Macuata, women are actively involved in community development, often joining together for a common purpose. This effort is being highlighted by Talei Silibaravi, a young leader coordinating the Cagimaiwai Women’s Club. She emphasizes the need for the community to adapt and grow, noting that the mindset must evolve to recognize ongoing development within their area.
Currently, the women of Kavewa are making significant strides, with support from local leaders. The Cagimaiwai Women’s Club has a long history of activity in community service and development. Since 2011, the women have led various initiatives, with a membership of around 30, some of whom are over 70 years old. They provide guidance and support to other women in the community.
In 2021, the group sought assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for biogas support, resulting in the procurement of 24 “Home Biogas” units to benefit several households. They are now also working to build a facility to store their catch using solar-powered freezers, which will help preserve fish and support local food security.
Despite the remote location of Kavewa, the community is making impressive progress. They face challenges with fish catch variability but are implementing projects aimed at aiding women and the wider community. Programs like the Self Help initiative are crucial in empowering the women and bolstering their efforts.
Additionally, the women regularly engage in community cleaning efforts and collaborate with the World Wildlife Fund to protect local wildlife and habitats, addressing the dire environmental needs of their region. They are also involved in enhancing community infrastructure and supporting minor projects, all of which are positively recognized by local leaders and youth.
As the Cagimaiwai Women’s Club continues to grow, there is a strong vision for establishing a cooperative in the coming months, indicating a hopeful trajectory towards further empowerment and community support. The Minister for Women is attentive to the feedback and concerns raised by these organizations, advocating for increased resources and development opportunities.
This collective effort showcases the resilience and dedication of the Kavewa women towards improving their community, highlighting the vital role of women’s organizations in driving sustainable development.
