Spread the love

In the community of Kavewa, Nadogo, Macuata, women are uniting to take on significant responsibilities that enhance their local development. This remarkable shift is spearheaded by Talei Silibaravi, a young leader actively involved in the Cagimaiwai Women’s Club, an organization dedicated to empowering women in the region.

Talei emphasizes the need for continuous adaptation and progress: “We must evolve and move with the times, enhancing our perspectives to recognize ongoing developmental opportunities in our land.” Currently, the women of Kavewa are making substantial strides, supported by local men who are fully engaged in their efforts. The Cagimaiwai Women’s Club has a rich history, having been established several years ago to provide a platform for women to contribute to community service and other initiatives.

As of today, approximately 30 women are active members of the club, some of whom are over 70 years old, demonstrating a commendable commitment to mentoring and guiding younger members. The revival of organizational efforts among women began around 2011 when the community started to recognize the importance of their collective contributions.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has played a supportive role, assisting these women in adopting biogas technology to improve their work efficiency. To date, they have successfully procured 24 ‘Home Biogas’ systems, which have proven to be a valuable resource for the families involved.

One of the club’s latest initiatives involves building a solar freezer to store fish, a crucial resource for preserving food in the community. This project aims to enhance local livelihoods and ensure sustainable practices within the village.

Despite their remote location and challenges such as limited fishing successes, the women are committed to making positive changes through various projects that benefit not just them, but the broader community as well. Their engagement with the Self Help Programme highlights the focus on self-sufficiency and collective effort.

The women are also actively involved in environmental conservation efforts in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund, aiming to protect local wildlife and preserve the delicate ecosystems in their region. Their initiatives extend to community improvement and numerous small-scale programs that enhance the quality of life for all residents.

As the community continues to thrive, there are plans to establish a cooperative aimed at further empowering local women. This vision has garnered support from local authorities, although challenges remain in securing government backing and educational resources for these initiatives.

In summary, the women of Kavewa are exemplifying leadership and resilience in their pursuit of community development. Their collaborative efforts and initiatives reflect a hopeful future as they strive to uplift themselves and their community, setting a powerful example for others to follow.
