Approximately 2,500 women who own micro businesses from across Fiji came together last Friday in Suva to celebrate the 14th South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) Foundation Day and the 2023 annual awards, which honored their contributions to the economy and their personal achievements.
SPBD, Fiji’s largest microfinance network with more than 7,000 members across eight branches in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Ovalau, and Taveuni, was founded by American social entrepreneur Greg Casagrande in December 2010. Since its inception, the organization has supported over 20,000 women in 450 communities throughout Fiji.
Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, officiated the event and acknowledged the significant impact these women have had on their families and local communities. He emphasized that the celebration was not only about presenting awards but also about recognizing the resilience, creativity, and commitment of women who are changing their lives and uplifting those around them.
Ratu Wiliame highlighted the theme of this year’s awards, “Women-led micro enterprises: enriching lives and building future,” noting that it aptly showcased the transformative role women play in Fiji’s socio-economic environment. He remarked on the holistic approach of women-led enterprises in creating sustainable livelihoods, addressing social issues, and nurturing future generations.
He stated, “When women are economically empowered, they become crucial agents of change, promoting prosperity for future generations.” He also noted that the achievements of the nominees serve as a testament to the extraordinary potential present in everyone when given the right opportunities.
Lorainne Seeto, the chief judge for the awards and an independent director on SPBD’s board, expressed that choosing the winners was a challenging process because each finalist exhibited exceptional qualities deserving of recognition.
Greg Casagrande encouraged SPBD women to maintain their dreams and work towards achieving them daily, particularly emphasizing the importance of ensuring their children receive complete education, including higher education.
