Empowering Women: SPBD Awards Celebrate Fiji’s Micro Business Leaders

Approximately 2,500 women microbusiness owners from across Fiji came together last Friday in Suva to celebrate the 14th anniversary of the South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) Foundation and the 2023 annual awards that honored their contributions and achievements in the economy.

Founded in December 2010 by American social entrepreneur Greg Casagrande, SPBD is Fiji’s largest microfinance network, boasting over 7,000 members across eight branches located in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Ovalau, and Taveuni. Since its inception, SPBD has served more than 20,000 women throughout a network of 450 Fijian villages and communities.

During the event, President of Fiji Ratu Wiliame Katonivere acknowledged the impact these women have had on their families and their communities. He emphasized the significance of the evening, stating, “Tonight is about more than just award presentations. It’s about honoring resilience, creativity, and dedication of the women who are transforming their lives and uplifting their families and communities in our beloved nation.”

Ratu Wiliame also highlighted this year’s theme, “Women-led micro enterprises: enriching lives and building future,” as a powerful representation of the positive changes women are making in Fiji’s socio-economic environment. He noted, “The holistic nature of women-led enterprises often focuses on creating sustainable livelihoods, addressing social challenges, and nurturing the next generation.”

He further explained that empowering women economically positions them as crucial agents of change, ultimately fostering prosperity for future generations. “The achievements of the nominees serve as a powerful reminder of the limitless potential that lies within each one of us when given the right opportunities,” he stated.

Chief judge Lorainne Seeto, an independent board director at SPBD, shared that selecting the winners was a challenging task, as each finalist displayed remarkable qualities deserving recognition.

Greg Casagrande encouraged SPBD women to remain committed to their aspirations and to strive daily towards them. He added, “Having your children obtain a complete education, including tertiary education, should be part of that dream.”

The evening’s highlight was the presentation of the main award, the SPBD Businesswoman of the Year, which was awarded to Elena Tinai from Saru Centre, Lautoka Branch.

Other accolades included: Centre of the Year Award given to Waimanu Centre, Suva Branch; Centre Chief of the Year Award awarded to Alisi Naiqama; Centre Secretary of the Year Award to Elena Lagia; Financial Education Facilitator of the Year Award to Salaseini Maca from Joritani Centre, Lautoka Branch; Best Saver of the Year Award to Senimili Draunileva from Tau Centre, Sigatoka Branch; Centre Saver of the Year Award to Suva Market Vendor Centre, Suva Branch; and New Centre of the Year Award to Naivita Centre, Savusavu Branch.
