The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, dedicated to supporting women cancer survivors, officially opened its doors yesterday in Nabua, marking an important step in the care of those impacted by cancer.

Mereane Vavataga, CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, highlighted the significance of the new facility. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” Ms. Vavataga explained. “They can find rest and nourishment here in a safe space where they can discuss their experiences and the challenges they face.”

Founded in 2021, the NGO focuses on aiding the spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery of women who have survived cancer. Ms. Vavataga shared that they organize biannual retreats for different groups of survivors at hotels to foster relationships and build trust. Following these retreats, participants engage in a three-week Bible study program that emphasizes spiritual, emotional, and personal healing.

Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori, who officiated the opening ceremony, commended the initiative. “Thank you for creating this hub where people can find a safe haven and connect with others who care,” he remarked.

Cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her inspiring journey at the event. “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive,” Ms. Tikoduadua recounted, underscoring the vital need for support networks like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “I’m really grateful for this organization because after cancer treatment, the experience can be quite lonely.”

Ms. Vavataga expressed her hopes for the organization’s future, including plans to establish a hospice, stating that this hub is just the beginning. The Self Care Retreat Fiji relies heavily on donations and partnerships to continue its mission. “For this building, I even shaved my head to raise funds,” she added, referencing her involvement in the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
