The Minister of Fisheries, Alitia Bainivalu, has presented a boat and a fiberglass kit to the women’s cooperative known as Nasomo Ra Marama in Somosomo, Taveuni. This initiative aims to bolster the sustainable sea cucumber business operated by local women, with hopes of enhancing their economic opportunities.
During the ceremony, which took place on Saturday, the minister emphasized the importance of supporting local women in their endeavors to increase their sea cucumber business. This contribution is intended to empower them and promote better practices in their livelihood.
The initiative received gratitude from the women’s group for the support provided by the government. It’s noted that the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) has played a significant role in facilitating economic development through practical training, which has proven beneficial for the local community.
Claude Prevost, a local sea cucumber business operator, remarked on the ongoing efforts and improvements within the sector, lauding the benefits brought about by these initiatives and the potential for generating income.
The minister encouraged the women to take good care of government provisions, asserting that their collaboration and unified efforts are key to achieving greater success in their ventures, leading to significant income generation. Additionally, the minister highlighted the introduction of new legislation concerning sustainable fishing practices, acknowledging its potential impact on their livelihoods.
Minister Bainivalu expressed hope that the women’s group in Somosomo will continue to thrive and contribute to the community and beyond, further enhancing Fiji’s reputation for responsible and lucrative fishing practices.
