The Minister for Fisheries, Alitia Bainivalu, visited the community group in Somosomo, Taveuni this week to deliver a boat and a fiberglass license to support the development of women’s fishing businesses. This initiative is aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of local women involved in the sustainable fishing industry.
During her visit on Saturday, Bainivalu emphasized the significance of this support, stating it would assist women in elevating their fishing enterprises. The Minister recognized the efforts made by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) in empowering women and enhancing work opportunities in the region.
Claude Prevost, a local business operator in Taveuni, reiterated the positive impact of such initiatives on the fishing sector, noting that previous efforts have made significant financial contributions to the community. He expressed confidence that with continued support, many more opportunities would arise for women engaged in fishing.
The Minister further encouraged the women to effectively utilize government resources to improve their businesses. She highlighted that collaboration among the community is key in achieving both growth and sustainability in the fisheries industry. The recent approval of legislation concerning sustainable fishing practices is expected to further enhance these efforts.
In a positive twist, the initiatives led by Bainivalu and supported by ACIAR have the potential to foster community resilience and empower women, creating a ripple effect of economic benefits that could sustain families and the local economy long into the future.
This initiative demonstrates a commitment to not only sustain but enhance local fisheries, driving forward a brighter economic outlook for Taveuni and beyond.
