Empowering Women in Politics: The Call for Online Safety Investments

The government must prioritize investments in the Online Safety Commission, according to John Apted, a litigation partner at Munroe Ley Lawyers. He brought up this concern during a discussion titled “Breaking Barriers: Increasing Female Participation in Local Government Elections in Fiji” held at Tanoa Plaza on Tuesday evening.

Apted highlighted that social media poses significant challenges for women aspiring to enter politics, noting that its influence has eclipsed traditional media. He expressed concern about the toxic nature of Fiji’s social media environment, which often targets women and LGBTQ+ individuals with cruelty and negativity.

He pointed out popular platforms like Chat Fiji, where personal and sensitive images can be shared without consent, creating a discouraging environment for women seeking to engage politically. Despite existing legislation aimed at holding individuals accountable for such behavior, Apted criticized the lack of government investment in enforcing these laws.

He emphasized the need for increased budget allocations, personnel, and public awareness initiatives to enhance online safety. Apted urged women to voice their concerns to the government and advocate for greater investment in online safety measures, as this would empower them to participate more actively in public life.
