Empowering Women in Land Surveying: A Graduate’s Call to Action

Fiji National University (FNU) graduate Grace Sovalawa emphasized the need for increased female representation in the land surveying field during the institution’s Open Day in Nasinu on Friday.

Ms. Sovalawa mentioned her experience with AutoCAD, a 2D and 3D computer-aided design software, as well as various surveying techniques for different land types. She noted that the program also covers aspects of architecture and engineering, including building construction.

The 21-year-old from Suvalailai, Rewa, earned her diploma in Land Survey after three years of study. She remarked that while entering a traditionally male-dominated field can be challenging, determination can lead to success. She stressed that there is a shortage of land surveyors in Fiji and encouraged more women to pursue this career.

Ms. Sovalawa highlighted that the role of a land surveyor is ideal for women who enjoy outdoor activities such as camping and sightseeing. She noted some students find calculations difficult due to the heavy emphasis on mathematics and physics in the program, but peer support is available.

To enroll in this program, students need to pass both English and Mathematics, achieving a minimum score of 200 out of 400. Ms. Sovalawa also mentioned that the university offers extracurricular activities like FUSA (Fiji University Sports Association) games and debates.

Moreover, she pointed out that students have the opportunity to transfer credits to the University of the South Pacific (USP) for courses in Geographic Information System (GIS) and can apply for scholarships abroad. Currently, Ms. Sovalawa works at KGenesis Engineering and Consultant Pte Ltd as a chainman/survey technician.
