Empowering Women in Land Surveying: A Call to Action from FNU Graduate

Fiji National University (FNU) graduate Grace Sovalawa emphasized the need for more women in the field of land surveying during the institution’s Open Day held in Nasinu on Friday.

“I primarily learned to use AutoCAD, which is a 2D and 3D computer-aided design software, along with various land surveying techniques,” Ms. Sovalawa stated. She noted that the program also covers architecture and other engineering-related requirements, such as building construction.

At just 21 years old, Grace, who hails from Suvalailai, Rewa, earned her diploma in Land Survey after three years of dedicated study. “This field is accessible to everyone, but for women entering this male-dominated industry, it can be quite challenging due to the pressures,” she remarked. “However, determination can lead to success in this field.”

Ms. Sovalawa pointed out that there is a shortage of land surveyors in Fiji and encouraged more women to consider this career path. She believes this profession is well-suited for women who enjoy outdoor activities such as camping and sightseeing.

She acknowledged that some students find the program challenging due to the heavy emphasis on mathematics and physics, but peer support is readily available. The entry requirements for this course include passing grades in both English and Mathematics, as well as achieving a score of at least 200 out of 400.

Additionally, Ms. Sovalawa mentioned the extracurricular activities available at FNU, like the Fiji University Sports Association (FUSA) games and debate competitions. “One of the advantages of this program is that students can transfer credits to the University of the South Pacific (USP) and pursue Geographic Information System (GIS) courses,” she said.

Ms. Sovalawa currently works at KGenesis Engineering and Consultant Pte Ltd as a chainman/survey technician.
