An apprenticeship program at Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) is achieving success and creating opportunities for women in engineering, a field that has historically been male-dominated. One of the participants, Siobahn Bogidrau, a 20-year-old electrical fitter apprentice at Lautoka Mill, embodies determination and resilience.

Siobahn emphasizes the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. Despite not having female role models in engineering during her upbringing, her interest was sparked during high school career classes. Motivated by the prospects of the field and the encouragement from fellow apprentices, she joined the FSC Apprentice Program in 2024.

The program provides essential hands-on experience and technical training for aspiring young engineers. It aims to equip participants with the skills needed for successful careers in engineering and technical fields, offering comprehensive training that combines theoretical learning with practical application, including electrical maintenance, mechanical repairs, and process optimization in the sugar industry. This holistic approach enhances technical skills while fostering a community spirit among apprentices.

Siobahn appreciates the support FSC provides, stating that the corporation helps her build confidence through on-the-job training and technical skills. She feels recognized and valued in her role.

“I’m proud to work towards strengthening the sugar industry,” Siobahn expressed, highlighting her commitment to the sector’s growth and sustainability. Looking to the future, she is excited to advance her studies in engineering, viewing her current training as only the beginning.

To young women considering careers in male-dominated fields, Siobahn encourages them to persist with their goals, affirming that women can achieve equally as men in any profession, including engineering.

FSC is dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusion within its workforce. The apprentice program plays a pivotal role in providing a supportive environment for women like Siobahn. As female representation in engineering roles increases, she remains hopeful about the future and believes more women will join the sugar industry.

The FSC apprentice program is focused on cultivating the next generation of engineers and technicians. It invites passionate young women to apply for the transformative opportunities available within the sugar industry. Applications for the 2025 FSC Apprentice Program will be open in November.
