Moreen Ram, a mom who has become a successful entrepreneur and rice farmer, was honored as the Best Young Farmer of the Year (Female) during the 2023 President’s Farmers Award ceremony held by Fiji Rice Limited in Labasa. The 35-year-old received her award from Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, and expressed deep pride in her accomplishment.

Living in Muanidevo, Dreketi, Ms. Ram has dedicated the last seven years to developing her rice farming business, with unwavering support from her husband, who despite being a civil servant, always makes time to assist her on the farm.

Motivated by her family’s longstanding involvement in rice farming, Ms. Ram shared that the knowledge and passion for agriculture were passed down from her parents. As the new growing season approaches in November, she aims to harvest seven tonnes of rice paddy, having overcome previous challenges related to drainage and access to harvesting equipment through a cooperative system where local farmers share resources.

Ms. Ram has highlighted rice farming’s profitability, noting a price increase from $850 to $1000 per tonne last December, which has encouraged farmers to stay in the business. She is also planning to seek subsidies for planting and weed control to enhance her farming practices.

She encourages other women to consider rice farming, stating, “It may seem difficult, but nothing is impossible if you are determined.” Her ambition is clear: she aims to become the best farmer in Fiji and believes that women can achieve great things if they remain committed to their goals.
