Empowering Women in Agriculture: A Floriculture Training Success

In an effort to promote gender equality and support economic empowerment, the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways has successfully concluded a two-day floriculture training program in Olosara, Sigatoka. This event, which took place on February 11 and 12 at My Nursery, aimed to equip women farmers with essential skills to excel in floriculture, contributing to both economic development and greater gender equity within agriculture.

The initiative, funded by the Ministry, featured the expertise of floriculture specialists Moreen Sainaz Khan and Emili Uluimalolo. The training drew participation from 25 women and two male farmers, who actively engaged in learning about nursery management, care for anthuriums and orchids, flower arrangement techniques, and ways to enhance the value of floriculture products.

Senior Agriculture Officer Ilisoni Banuve stated that the goal of this training program was to provide women in Nadroga and Navosa with the tools necessary to take leadership roles in agriculture and improve their financial independence. “By fostering female leadership and innovation in agriculture, we aim to create economic opportunities and promote gender equality,” Banuve expressed.

The hands-on training not only aimed to provide participants with skills but also to boost their confidence, enhancing their capacity to generate income for their families. Banuve encouraged participants to utilize government assistance programs and maximize land use to drive positive change in their communities.

This initiative aligns with broader government efforts focusing on women’s empowerment across various regions in Fiji. A similar program previously highlighted tackled gender inequalities in rural areas, emphasizing collaborative efforts among diverse communities. Such programs are crucial in empowering women and enhancing agricultural practices, fostering hope for a more balanced and thriving agricultural sector.

As the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways continues to place emphasis on sustainable farming practices, future training sessions will aim to further equip women in agriculture with the necessary resources to thrive in an evolving agricultural landscape. This ongoing support not only enhances individual capabilities but also strengthens community resilience and economic stability, creating a brighter future for all involved.
