Members of the Soqosoqo vakamarama ni Yasana o Kadavu have been encouraged to leverage their traditional skills and resources to enhance their micro, small, or medium enterprises. During the opening of a two-day capacity-building program for Kadavu’s women at the GCC lounge in Suva, Assistant Minister for Women Sashi Kiran highlighted the importance of maintaining traditional knowledge in today’s market, which is increasingly dominated by synthetic products.

Ms. Kiran, drawing from her 25 years of experience in economic empowerment, emphasized the uniqueness of traditional skills. She stated that, with the abundance of cheap synthetic goods in the marketplace, it’s essential for women to carve out a niche by focusing on the handcrafted items that consumers crave.

She specifically mentioned products such as voivoi mats and jewelry, suggesting that these could be marketed as distinctive boutique items created from natural fibers. “Quality is crucial,” she stressed, pointing out that traditional cuisine could also be a valuable avenue for economic development.

Kiran urged participants to consider the unique resources available on the island, such as salt making, crafts, dried tapioca or plantain flour, and traditional oils and herbs. These products could be packaged in a way that ensures quality, is lightweight for transport, and boasts a long shelf life.

She also mentioned the potential for women to reach wider markets through online platforms, presenting an opportunity to promote their products beyond the local scope. By harnessing their traditional skills, women can not only achieve economic empowerment but also enable their communities to thrive.

This initiative shines a light on the vital role women can play in economic development, promoting sustainability, and preserving cultural heritage. The path forward is hopeful, with the potential for these women to transform their crafts into thriving businesses that honor their traditions while meeting contemporary market demands.
