The Soqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei (SSV) recently celebrated its 100th anniversary under the theme “The Future and New Beginnings.” Established in 1924, the SSV stands as Fiji’s oldest women’s empowerment organization. Over the years, it has grown into a significant umbrella body representing women from all 14 provinces, encompassing 860 tikina and 1,192 villages across Fiji.

During the celebrations, Adi Finau Tabakaucoro, the current president of the SSV, discussed the organization’s rich history and its lasting impact on the women’s movement in Fiji. The SSV was originally founded by a missionary couple at the Davuilevu Educational Institute, aimed at supporting the wives of students primarily through training in nutrition, hygiene, and sanitation. This foundation laid the groundwork for what would evolve into a national movement focusing on leadership and good governance.

Throughout its history, the SSV has been led by influential women, including Adi Lady Sukuna and Adi Litia Tavanavanua, who played vital roles in national leadership. Notably, the SSV successfully negotiated the inclusion of women in the Senate after the 1987 coups, leading to significant female representation in governance.

Unlike other women’s groups in the country, the SSV adopts a consultative approach with decision-makers, emphasizing collaboration over confrontation. Adi Finau highlighted the organization’s commitment to advocating for the real impacts of government policies on everyday citizens.

Looking to the future, the SSV plans to review its constitution to enhance its effectiveness and expand its membership criteria. By focusing on wealth creation and empowering its 200,000 members, the organization aims to better harness local resources and create sustainable business opportunities. There are ambitions to establish a company akin to Fijian Holdings, incorporating a more flexible investment structure to attract shareholders.

In summary, the SSV not only reflects a century of progress for women in Fiji but also signifies a commitment to future growth and empowerment. This dedication to improving the lives of its members offers hope for continued enhancement of women’s roles in society, showcasing a path toward creating a more inclusive and prosperous future for all Fijian women.

This article serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of continuously evolving structures that support women’s rights and empowerment in Fiji.
