The government is dedicated to promoting inclusive economic growth, with a particular emphasis on increasing the involvement of women and youth in cooperatives. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications Manoa Kamikamica addressed Parliament, highlighting that cooperatives serve as an excellent avenue for the engagement of women and youth in economic activities.
Kamikamica noted that cooperatives empower women and youth by generating income-producing opportunities. He presented data indicating a notable increase in female cooperative membership in the western region, with a rise of approximately 148 percent, resulting in women constituting 24 percent of total cooperative membership, up from 12 percent last year. This growth can be attributed to extensive outreach initiatives, tailored training programs, and financial support aimed at enhancing female participation in business, with significant advocacy from the Ministry of Women and various multilateral organizations.
Additionally, the ministry acknowledges the potential of Fiji’s youth to contribute significantly to cooperative development. The Minister for Youth has encouraged young men and women to pursue business initiatives through cooperatives. Kamikamica expressed optimism about the growth of youth-led cooperatives, emphasizing that young people bring innovative ideas and entrepreneurial energy, which can drive cooperatives into the future.
