A capacity-building program aimed at empowering women was launched in Suva, attracting over 30 participants from the Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Yasana o Kadavu. The initiative focuses on enhancing leadership and communication skills for women leaders from the nine districts of Kadavu over a two-day event.
Salote Nawalowalo, president of Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Yasana o Kadavu, highlighted that women often struggle in leadership roles due to the perception that their decisions are less significant. This leads to a lack of confidence, causing them to hesitate in expressing their ideas and recommendations. Ms. Nawalowalo noted that ineffective communication within groups also contributes to dwindling productivity, as important decisions can go uncommunicated.
The decision to launch this training program stemmed from observations made during their last annual general meeting, where it was evident that some women were not fully participating in their roles. Given that their last training program was held in 2017, the need for renewed empowerment is vital, especially considering the loss of many past participants.
In today’s changing landscape, Ms. Nawalowalo encouraged women to unite, creating environments of support and empowerment while overcoming negativity. She emphasized that women, making up half of the population, should collaborate effectively and uplift one another, rather than allowing fear to hold them back from pursuing their potential.
She also urged other Soqosoqo Vakamarama groups across the country to take advantage of available funding to participate in similar training programs.
This initiative promises to foster a supportive community among women, ultimately leading to a more engaged and confident group of leaders who can positively influence their communities.
In summary, this training program not only addresses leadership and communication challenges faced by women but also aims to strengthen their collective voice and promote a culture of mutual support. With a focus on positive collaboration, the future looks promising for women leaders in Kadavu.
