Empowering Women: A Look at Fiji’s MSME Champions

During the 14th South Pacific Business Development Foundation Day and Businesswoman of the Year Awards 2024 at the Vodafone Arena, President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere announced that there are approximately 5,500 registered women actively participating in micro, small, and medium enterprises.

In addition, he noted that there are around 18,742 self-employed women and 4,650 women working in the handicraft sector, highlighting the significant presence of women in various business ventures.

Elena Tinai from the Saru Centre in Lautoka was awarded the SPBD Businesswoman of the Year award this year in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the community.

The President emphasized the holistic approach taken by women-led enterprises, which often aim to create sustainable livelihoods while addressing social challenges and fostering the next generation. He pointed out that this sector represents about 82 percent of registered businesses in Fiji, underscoring its vital role in the country’s economic landscape.

With over 30,000 registered micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Ratu Wiliame described this sector as the backbone of the economy, driving growth, fostering innovation, and promoting diversification, especially in rural areas.
