Women have the potential to support their families effectively if they are empowered, according to Theresa Waqanibau, a representative from the Lautoka Women’s Forum. She expressed these views during her participation in the inaugural ministerial forum on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, held at the Harbour Point Convention Centre in Lami.
“This is my first time attending this ministerial forum, and I aim to take back valuable insights related to the rising issues of gender-based violence affecting both women and children,” Waqanibau stated. She highlighted the persistent belief that men hold dominance in family structures, emphasizing the need for change to promote gender equality and recognize women’s capability to provide for their families.
Waqanibau intends to utilize the knowledge gained from this one-day conference to support the members of the Lautoka Women’s Forum. She noted the economic challenges many women in the Western Division face, feeling undervalued and incapable of contributing financially. She believes the outcomes of the forum could lead to significant improvements for these women.
Patrick Morgan, CEO of Empower Pacific Fiji, shared similar sentiments, expressing gratitude for being invited and highlighting the relevance of the forum’s thematic areas. “We fully endorse the ministry’s chosen pillars for discussion and are committed to contributing to a safer environment for women and girls in Fiji, ensuring recognition of their rights and responsibilities by employers,” Morgan said. He hopes the forum strengthens the partnership between the government and civil society organizations.
