The 2024 Women’s Mock Parliament concluded with a sense of achievement and hope, as 55 participants, representing various regions of Fiji, gathered to discuss pressing national issues. Women traveled from locations including Labasa, Koro, and Ovalau, highlighting their commitment to advocate for greater representation in Parliament.
The Mock Parliament aimed not simply for statistical equality but to create a legislative body that truly reflects the needs of the nation. The event commenced with a welcome gala dinner on July 28, where speeches from donor organizations underscored the importance of the initiative and the extensive planning that made it possible.
Participants engaged in informative sessions over the first two days, learning about parliamentary processes, skills, and policy-making, all designed to equip them for their roles in the parliamentary chamber. Despite having the option to choose between the Government or Opposition sides, the assignments of ministerial positions highlighted biases and collaborations within the group.
The culminating third day allowed the mock parliamentarians to present their views on three motions related to critical issues such as enhancement of maternal healthcare funding in rural regions, environmental conservation affecting women, and the necessity for increased women’s involvement in decision-making. The diversity of experiences shared highlighted the unique challenges faced by women in different areas of Fiji, particularly concerning maternal healthcare.
Jacinta Renu from Labasa addressed the significant hardships pregnant women endure, especially in remote areas where they must navigate difficult conditions to access health services. Her speech resonated with both attendees and viewers, emphasizing the need for support and understanding of varying women’s experiences.
As discussions unfolded, the mock parliamentarians forged deeper connections through shared stories and experiences, illustrating the human aspect behind their advocacy. This experience reinforced the necessity of understanding one another, irrespective of gender, race, or background, as women’s issues are often national issues that deserve attention.
The event’s organizers and participants were acknowledged for their efforts in facilitating this essential platform that fosters future initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s representation in politics.
Several mock parliamentarians shared their reflections on the experience, noting the empowerment and confidence gained throughout the process. Shivashni Dutt expressed her ambition to influence change in her nation, while Losana Derenalagi highlighted the importance of women’s participation in all decision-making arenas. Raniyah Muhammed emphasized how the Mock Parliament experience enhanced her understanding of governance and the critical role women play in shaping inclusive policies.
