Riya Bhagwan, a 20-year-old aspiring journalist from Nadi, is driven by her passion for connecting with grassroots communities and advocating for vulnerable groups. Currently, she is a second-year journalism and social work student at the University of the South Pacific. Riya’s family background includes her parents managing an electronics business across multiple cities, which highlights her roots in entrepreneurship.

Her initial interest in journalism sparked during her high school years at Sangam SKM College when a leadership role and public speaking experiences shifted her focus from International Business and Marketing to a career in journalism. Riya draws inspiration from her grandfather, Bharat Morris, who was one of the early reporters for the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation. His stories about the demanding yet rewarding nature of journalism have influenced her perspective on the profession.

Over the past two years in her studies, Riya has realized that practical experience is crucial for aspiring journalists. She emphasizes the importance of applying theoretical knowledge in the field, stating that real-world assignments have further deepened her love for journalism. Riya aims to focus her reporting on issues affecting women, children, and vulnerable communities in Fiji, recognizing the significant work still needed to attain gender equality.

She acknowledges the current competitive landscape of the local media industry and the pressures placed on journalists to meet tight deadlines. However, Riya encourages aspiring journalists to view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles.
