The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has stated that people now feel more liberated and willing to engage with the government and its officials. He made these remarks during a recent meeting with farmers and residents from Viria, Muaniweni, Ilahabad, Urcalia, and Vatoa Street, accompanied by representatives from the Fiji Police Force and other ministries.
Professor Prasad expressed confidence that the government has successfully alleviated public fears, allowing citizens to speak more freely. The community members expressed gratitude for the government’s ongoing support, including new initiatives like back-to-school assistance.
During the meeting, residents brought forward various issues including access to clean drinking water, the conditions of rural roads, drainage problems, farm thefts, stray animals, agricultural extension services, and healthcare facilities. They also highlighted the rising problem of illicit drugs affecting their communities.
The Minister noted that the Ministry of Agriculture has received substantial funding aimed at supporting not only sugarcane farmers but also other agricultural producers. He mentioned that subsidies for herbicides and pesticides are now available to assist farmers.
Professor Prasad reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s dedication to addressing these community concerns promptly and acknowledged the significant drug issue impacting Fiji, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding schools and children from drug-related dangers. He indicated that efforts are underway to enhance the Police Force’s capabilities.
Additionally, the Minister highlighted the ongoing improvements in health services, stating that many health centers had been in disrepair. While acknowledging that not all issues have been resolved, he assured that progress is being made.
He concluded with a commitment to continue holding regular community meetings to foster an inclusive approach that engages all community members in decision-making and addresses important issues related to community and national development.
