Forty-seven students from Nadi, having received training from police officers, are now equipped to assume leadership positions within their communities.
These students, hailing from various schools in Nadi and Sigatoka, took part in a two-day Blue Light leadership and practical skills development program at Korovuto College in Nadi. The initiative was organized and supported by Blue Light, a registered charity based in New Zealand that partners with police to provide a variety of youth programs and activities.
Blue Light aims to diminish the chances of young individuals becoming offenders or victims of crime while promoting improved relationships among the police, youth, parents, and the broader community.
On Wednesday, the 47 students officially graduated from the program.
Divisional Police Commander West Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa urged the students to serve as agents of change within their schools and communities.
He remarked, “Reflect on everything you have learned. We have gathered from various parts of Nadi because we see the leadership potential in you.” SSP Vaisewa cautioned students about the dangers faced by some of their peers, including drug use, sexual offenses, assault, burglary, and theft.
He highlighted the issues surrounding drug use, glue sniffing, and the sharing of explicit photos for money and sex, which contribute to a negative perception of today’s youth and present significant challenges for Fiji.
“Some of your peers are on this troubling path. However, you still have the chance to choose the right direction,” SSP Vaisewa emphasized.
He urged them to recognize their self-worth and potential, saying, “Understand the importance of your choices. Regardless of what others may say about you, know your value and abilities. You were selected for this program to become agents of change.”
