Empowering Tomorrow: Youth Embrace Digital Pathways for Change

The International Youth Day was celebrated for the first time in Vanua Levu, drawing young people from across the North to the Naulumatua Ground in Bua.

Under the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru emphasized the importance of using technology effectively to foster community development.

Minister Saukuru noted, “Despite ongoing challenges like the digital divide, youth are often called ‘digital natives,’ taking the lead in embracing and innovating with new technologies.” He highlighted that this demographic represents the largest group of users and developers influencing global digital trends.

With the approaching 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Minister stressed that young people are crucial in harnessing technology’s transformative power to tackle global issues. He explained that digital technology and data contribute significantly to achieving at least 70% of the 169 SDG targets.

“Digital technologies have profound impacts across economic, social, and environmental areas through 232 measurable indicators,” added Minister Saukuru. He encouraged the youth to leverage digital pathways for sustainable development, aiming to create a brighter future for upcoming generations.

As the gathering celebrated International Youth Day, there was a collective commitment to empowering young people toward a more sustainable and inclusive future. The event also marked the beginning of the weeklong Bua Youth Festival.
