Empowering the Next Generation: Fiji’s Vision for Youth Development in the Pacific

Fiji reaffirmed its commitment to youth development in the Pacific during the South Pacific Youth Senior Government officials meeting held in Nadi. The director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Phillip Hereniko, delivered a keynote address emphasizing this year’s theme, “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific,” which reflects the nation’s recognition that the future of the region rests with its youth.

Hereniko stated that the Ministry has been at the forefront of youth development initiatives, noting that their commitment to the cause extends beyond policies and programs, forming a fundamental part of the national agenda. He highlighted recent initiatives, including the review of youth development policies and laws, the establishment of the National Youth Council of Fiji, and the launch of The Youth Education Sex App aimed at educating youth about sexual reproductive health services.

He expressed appreciation to UNFPA and UNICEF for their support and stressed the need for inclusivity in youth development, ensuring that no young person is excluded regardless of their background, gender, or location. Hereniko also mentioned the success of Youth Festivals and symposiums that unite young Fijians from various backgrounds to celebrate diversity and share their aspirations and challenges.

As the Senior Officials Youth Meeting progresses, Hereniko communicated Fiji’s desire to build on existing progress, learn from shared experiences, and create innovative strategies that will empower the next generation. He underscored the importance of collaboration, resource sharing, and harnessing the unique strengths of each nation to cultivate a Pacific region where every young person can achieve their full potential.
