Empowering the Next Generation: Fiji’s Vision for Youth Development in the Pacific

Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to youth development in the Pacific during the South Pacific Youth Senior Government Officials Meeting in Nadi. In his keynote address, Phillip Hereniko, director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, emphasized that this year’s theme, “Recommitted to Youth Development in the Pacific,” reflects the nation’s belief that the future of the region depends on its youth.

Hereniko noted that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has been a leader in youth development initiatives, asserting that their commitment transcends mere policies and programs; it is fundamental to their national agenda. He shared recent initiatives, such as reviewing youth development policies and laws, establishing the National Youth Council of Fiji, and launching The Youth Education Sex App to inform young people about sexual and reproductive health services.

He also expressed appreciation for the support from UNFPA and UNICEF, highlighting the necessity of inclusivity in youth development to ensure no young individual is overlooked, regardless of their background, gender, or location. Hereniko pointed out the success of Youth Festivals and symposiums in uniting young Fijians from various backgrounds to celebrate diversity and express their aspirations and challenges.

As the Senior Officials Youth Meeting progresses, he hopes to build on the strides made, learn from shared experiences, and devise innovative strategies to empower the next generation. He underscored the importance of collaboration, resource sharing, and utilizing the unique strengths of each nation to foster a Pacific region where every young person can achieve their full potential.
