Empowering the Global South: Fiji’s Fight Against Climate Change Challenges

Small Island Developing States (SIDs) like Fiji face distinct challenges related to climate change, even though they contribute less than 1 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. This message was conveyed by the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, during the 3rd Voice of the Global South Summit, which took place last Friday via livestream from the CAAF conference room in Namaka, Nadi.

The summit emphasized Fiji’s commitment to addressing significant challenges confronting the Global South. Mr. Gavoka expressed his appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for organizing the summit and highlighted India’s proactive approach in representing the interests of the Global South on an international level.

“The Global South is no longer a passive participant on the world stage,” Mr. Gavoka stated. “We are actively reshaping our narrative to reflect our mutual aspirations for a fair global order.”

He noted that the summit’s theme—”An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future”—deeply resonates with the collective goal of addressing contemporary challenges.

Mr. Gavoka explained that the term “Global South” refers to countries often labeled as developing, less developed, or underdeveloped. Many of these nations are located in the Southern Hemisphere, predominantly across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

He further acknowledged India’s role as a prominent advocate for these nations within the Global South. Mr. Gavoka emphasized the importance of international collaborations and platforms, such as the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance, to promote effective energy transitions and sustainable development for the Global South.
