The first national celebration of International Youth Day took place in Vanua Levu, bringing together young individuals from across the northern region at the Naulumatua Ground in Bua.
Under the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru emphasized the importance of using technological devices responsibly to foster community development.
Minister Saukuru remarked, “Despite ongoing challenges like the digital divide, our youth are often called ‘digital natives,’ leading in the adoption and innovation of new technologies.” He noted that young people form the largest group of users and developers influencing global digital trends.
With the 2030 deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approaching, he stressed that youth play a crucial role in leveraging technology to tackle global issues. He pointed out that digital technologies and data are pivotal in meeting at least 70% of the 169 targets outlined in the SDGs.
“This highlights the tremendous potential of our youth to utilize digital pathways for sustainable development and to create a brighter future for upcoming generations,” Minister Saukuru stated.
He concluded by urging everyone to renew their commitment to empowering and supporting youth in their pursuit of a more sustainable and inclusive future.
The celebration of International Youth Day coincided with the launch of the weeklong Bua Youth Festival.
