Empowering Seniors: A Call for Inclusion in Community Decisions

The CEO of Housing Assistance and Relief Trust (HART), Poserio Furivai, has called for greater inclusion of senior citizens in community decision-making processes. He highlighted a concerning trend where older adults are often sidelined once they are perceived to no longer contribute to the community. “Many seniors possess a wealth of experience and knowledge that should be valued in shaping policies that affect their lives,” said Furivai.

Furivai noted that modern family dynamics contribute to the isolation of elderly individuals, as they may be left alone at home while younger family members are at work or school. This separation can lead to feelings of loneliness and neglect. He emphasized the importance of enabling seniors to have their voices heard in discussions that relate to their wellbeing.

Interestingly, similar sentiments have been echoed by community leaders, such as Hassan Khan, chairperson of the Pearce Home Board of Trustees. He brought attention to the issue of ageism, which he states can lead to neglecting the elderly in disaster planning and response scenarios. Khan urged families to prioritize training caregivers within households to counter these challenges, especially as migration trends leave older family members without necessary support.

Both leaders underscore the necessity for a community-based approach that fosters proactive care for vulnerable populations, indicating a growing awareness concerning the needs of the elderly. By recognizing the capabilities and experiences of senior citizens, communities can cultivate a more inclusive environment that ensures no one is left behind.

This call for action reflects a hopeful vision for the future, wherein the contributions of seniors are acknowledged and their wellbeing is prioritized, promoting a culture of care that benefits everyone in society.
