Empowering Raiwaqa: Youths Making a Difference at Hibiscus Festival

This year’s Hibiscus Festival was notable not just for its venue and atmosphere, but also for the cleanliness of the Suva foreshore and seawall, thanks to the efforts of the Raiwaqa Unem Association.

The Sunday Times spoke with Ratu Kiniviliame Narokete, a member of the association, who shared insights into how these motivated youths have made a difference in their local community of Raiwaqa. At 56, Ratu Kini exemplifies that it is never too late to make a positive change.

The Raiwaqa Unem Association was originally formed by local elders to provide a platform for youths to engage in community service during school holidays. However, the group had disbanded, leading many youths to fall into negative behaviors.

Determined to make a difference, Ratu Kini organized community projects during his time in Derrick Street, gathering youths and children to clean their neighborhood and assist the elderly. After relocating to Tilak Lane, he expanded the initiative to even more youths along Milverton Road.

“We have formalized the association by opening a bank account and registering it,” he explained. The group primarily consists of unemployed youths from broken families seeking love and support. Ratu Kini aims to show them there is more to life.

Faith plays a crucial role in the association, with Ratu Kini emphasizing the importance of biblical teachings and the transformative power of submitting to Jesus.

“We want them to know they are loved and that they can change and contribute positively,” he said.

The impact of the Raiwaqa youths has been significant enough to catch the attention of the Suva City Council, which offered them a stall at the Hibiscus grounds for waste management during the festival. A dedicated team of 20 youths worked in shifts for 16 hours a day to maintain cleanliness.

The positive feedback from local businesses and the council reaffirmed Ratu Kini’s pride in his team’s commitment. They demonstrated teamwork and dedication throughout the event.

Looking ahead, Ratu Kini hopes for more opportunities from the council, believing his members can surpass the efforts of professional contractors.

He expressed gratitude for the support from families in Raiwaqa, encouraging struggling youths to have faith in their potential for change and improvement.
