On Friday, September 6, the Pacific Community introduced two new literacy resources in celebration of International Literacy Day.
These resources include a regional poetry booklet aimed at enhancing literacy through poetry, suitable for educators and parents across different educational levels. The booklet is titled “Voices of the Pacific Youth: A Literacy Learning Tool.”
Ruci Qele, the Pacific Community’s Educational Assessment Specialist for Literacy, noted that while the booklet is based on findings from the 2021 Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment, which focused on Year 4 and Year 6 students, it can be utilized by teachers, educators, and even parents to establish literacy foundations within Pacific students, regardless of their educational year.
Additionally, the Pacific Community launched the Pacific’s Education Research Bank, a digital platform on the Pacific Data Hub that grants access to regional education research and helps tackle information management issues.
The event also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the South Pacific Form Seven Certificate, a regional qualification for Year 13 students.
This year’s theme for International Literacy Day was Enhancing literacy through multilingualism: Promoting peace across the Blue Pacific Continent.
The Pacific Community aims to distribute these new resources to Education Ministries in its 15 member countries.
