Empowering Pacific Youth: New Literacy Resources Unveiled!

On Friday, September 6, the Pacific Community unveiled two new literacy resources in celebration of International Literacy Day.

These resources include a regional poetry booklet aimed at enhancing literacy through poetry, which is suitable for educators and parents across various educational levels. The booklet is named “Voices of the Pacific Youth: A Literacy Learning Tool.”

Ruci Qele, the Educational Assessment Specialist for Literacy at the Pacific Community, emphasized the versatility of the booklet, stating that while it was inspired by findings from the 2021 Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment, which targeted Year 4 and Year 6 students, it can be utilized by teachers, educators, and parents to lay the groundwork for literacy among Pacific students, regardless of their grade level.

Additionally, the Pacific Community introduced the Pacific’s Education Research Bank, a digital platform hosted on the Pacific Data Hub that provides access to regional education research and addresses challenges related to information management.

The event also commemorated the 20th anniversary of the South Pacific Form Seven Certificate, a regional qualification for Year 13 students.

The theme for this year’s literacy day focused on enhancing literacy through multilingualism and promoting peace across the Blue Pacific continent.

The Pacific Community intends to distribute these newly launched resources to Education Ministries across its 15 member countries.
