Empowering Pacific Youth: New Literacy Resources Unveiled

On September 6, the Pacific Community unveiled two new literacy resources in honor of International Literacy Day.

These resources include a regional poetry booklet aimed at enhancing literacy through poetry, designed for educators and parents across different educational levels. The booklet is titled “Voices of the Pacific Youth: A Literacy Learning Tool.”

Ruci Qele, the Educational Assessment Specialist for Literacy at the Pacific Community, noted that while the booklet is based on the findings of the Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment 2021 cycle, which focuses on Year 4 and Year 6 students, it serves as a valuable resource for teachers, educators, and parents to foster literacy skills among Pacific students at any educational stage.

The Pacific Community also introduced the Pacific Education Research Bank, a digital platform available on the Pacific Data Hub, which provides access to regional education research and aims to address information management challenges.

The event coincided with the 20th anniversary of the South Pacific Form Seven Certificate, a regional qualification for Year 13 students.

This year’s theme for Literacy Day was Enhancing literacy through multilingualism: Promoting peace across the Blue Pacific Continent.

The Pacific Community plans to distribute the new resources to Education Ministries in its 15 member countries.
