On Friday, September 6, the Pacific Community introduced two new literacy resources in celebration of International Literacy Day.
Among these resources is a regional poetry booklet aimed at enhancing literacy through poetry, catering to educators and parents across various educational levels. Titled “Voices of the Pacific Youth: A Literacy Learning Tool,” the booklet serves as a valuable aid.
Ruci Qele, the Educational Assessment Specialist for Literacy at the Pacific Community, noted that while the booklet was developed based on the findings from the 2021 cycle of the Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment, which focuses on Year 4 and Year 6 students, it is versatile enough for use by teachers, educators, and parents to help build literacy foundations for Pacific students of any year level.
Additionally, the Pacific Community introduced the Pacific’s Education Research Bank, a digital platform available on the Pacific Data Hub. This platform provides access to regional education research and addresses challenges related to information management.
The event also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the South Pacific Form Seven Certificate, a regional qualification for Year 13 students.
This year’s theme for International Literacy Day was “Enhancing literacy through multilingualism: Promoting peace across the Blue Pacific Continent.”
The Pacific Community plans to distribute these new resources to the Education Ministries of its 15 member countries.
