The upcoming Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference will focus on the progress and challenges surrounding gender equality. Representatives from twelve Pacific governments and civil society organizations will convene in Bangkok, Thailand, next week, with Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, joining the discussions.
Delphine Serumaga, representative of UN Women’s Fiji multi-country office, emphasized the importance of this conference, stating it provides a vital opportunity to amplify Pacific voices and reaffirm commitments to gender equality on an international level. She highlighted the collaborative efforts among governments, civil society, and partners to address the unique challenges faced by Pacific women and girls, ensuring their aspirations are prioritized.
This meeting comes as a pivotal moment as the region prepares for the Beijing +30 Review, marking 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a key framework aimed at advancing gender equality globally. The conference will facilitate conversations about pressing issues impacting Pacific communities, such as climate resilience, economic empowerment, and improved access to education and healthcare, alongside enhancing gender-responsive policies.
Fiji has been a signatory to the Beijing Declaration since 1995, demonstrating its long-standing commitment to promoting the empowerment and rights of women and girls. In conjunction with the conference, a Pacific Civil Society Organization Forum and the Women’s National Machinery Meeting will take place, further enriching the dialogue on gender equality.
This gathering not only serves to highlight the challenges at hand but also offers hope for progress as leaders unite to advocate for the representation of Pacific women and girls on a global scale. The discussions and outcomes could pave the way for renewed efforts and strategies aimed at achieving greater equity for all.
In summary, the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference is set to be a significant step toward advancing gender equality and ensuring that the voices and needs of Pacific women are recognized and addressed.
