The newly established Pacific Recyclers Alliance is making notable strides in grassroots recycling initiatives and empowering Collection Pillars of Recycling, which refers to individuals engaged in the collection of recyclable materials. This progress was highlighted at the 4th Clean Pacific Round Table (CPRT) organized by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) in Tuvalu.

The Pacific Recycling Foundation, which supports grassroots organizations, described this achievement as a pivotal moment for the CPR community and the wider grassroots recycling sector. Amitesh Deo, the founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation and Secretary of the Pacific Recyclers Alliance, noted that the outcomes from the CPRT included the formal recognition of the Alliance’s establishment, which aims to unite six existing National Recyclers Associations. This unification enhances efforts to harmonize waste management and pollution control throughout the Pacific and emphasizes the crucial role that Collection Pillars of Recycling play in their respective member states.

Pacific Island Countries and Territories have been urged to form their own National Recyclers Associations, thus promoting broader participation within the Alliance. Deo expressed the Alliance’s excitement by stating, “Our voices are finally being heard,” and emphasized that the recognition of the Collection Pillars of Recycling signifies a significant milestone for countless individuals involved in recyclable collection across Fiji and other Pacific nations. He highlighted that this acknowledgment validates the hard work of these communities, who are pivotal in advancing the region’s recycling and waste management efforts.

Deo also pointed out that the term “Collection Pillars of Recycling,” originated by a group of women in Vunato, Lautoka, has evolved from being applied to waste pickers to being recognized in regional discourse. This change marks a significant achievement, as a term initially introduced by informal collectors has entered high-level policy dialogues, highlighting their essential role in developing sustainable waste management practices across the Pacific.

He affirmed that the Pacific Recyclers Alliance remains dedicated to advocating for both the Collection Pillars of Recycling and grassroots recycling organizations throughout the Pacific region.
