Empowering Pacific Learners: New Literacy Resources Unveiled!

On September 6, the Pacific Community unveiled two new literacy resources in celebration of International Literacy Day.

Among the new materials is a regional poetry booklet aimed at enhancing literacy through poetry, suitable for educators and parents across various educational levels. This booklet is titled “Voices of the Pacific Youth: A Literacy Learning Tool.”

Ruci Qele, the Educational Assessment Specialist – Literacy at SPC, noted that while the booklet was based on the results of the 2021 Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment, which focused on Year 4 and Year 6 students, it can be utilized by teachers and parents to nurture literacy foundations among Pacific students at any grade level.

Additionally, SPC launched the Pacific’s Education Research Bank, a digital platform on the Pacific Data Hub that provides access to regional education research and addresses information management issues.

The event also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the South Pacific Form Seven Certificate, a regional qualification for Year 13 students.

This year’s International Literacy Day theme was “Enhancing literacy through multilingualism: Promoting peace across the Blue Pacific Continent.”

SPC intends to distribute these new resources to Education Ministries in its 15 member countries.
