Empowering Mothers: The Key to Fiji’s Future?

Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, emphasized the importance of honoring and cherishing mothers during her address at the Annual Mariamman Puja at the Venkatesh Perumal Temple in Nawai, Nadi. Kiran remarked on the vital role of mothers in society, urging everyone to express love and respect toward them, especially on Mother’s Day.

“In this special moment of prayer and worship, I ask that we pledge to fast from violence and instead offer our mothers the love they truly deserve,” Kiran said, paralleling the reverence for mothers with that shown to Maa Durga. She believes that by uplifting mothers, families, communities, and ultimately the nation will thrive.

Kiran also called on mothers to unite and form clubs to empower themselves, a practice she noted was once prevalent and essential for community development. She encouraged these clubs to engage with her ministry to access training and grants designed to facilitate growth and foster peaceful settlements throughout Fiji.

These sentiments echo her earlier addresses where she has consistently advocated for women’s empowerment and the necessity of collective efforts to overcome social challenges. Kiran’s focus on the integral roles women play at home and in community development draws parallels with recent calls from other officials, like Ulamila Cakau, to embrace maternal roles to enact positive societal change. Together, these messages underscore a shared vision for a harmonious and flourishing Fiji fostered by the respect and dedication given to women.

Kiran’s hopeful message reflects a commitment to nurturing both individual families and the nation, advocating that honor towards mothers is a foundational step toward societal well-being.
