Efforts are underway to strengthen the local governance structures in Fiji, with a focus on enhancing leadership within the communities, churches, and the government. Currently, 415 local governing positions have been established, with an additional 55 awaiting implementation in the Macuata region.
This initiative was highlighted by Ifereimi Vasu, the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, during a meeting in the village of Sasa, Macuata. He emphasized that the existing administrative framework allows for effective representation of village chiefs and clans within the district.
In addition, there has been a successful establishment of a framework supporting rural development alongside various community-based committees aimed at improving local governance. The government is also actively working on enhancing public services, especially in addressing essential infrastructure needs within the regions.
The Ministry is committed to the education of youth, particularly in promoting cultural practices and the iTaukei language in schools. The government recognizes the importance of improving healthcare and sanitation services, especially in rural areas, and is working closely with the Public Works Department to improve these services.
There is also encouragement for youth to engage in community service through the establishment of youth committees, which promote development initiatives throughout regional districts. The government’s ongoing efforts reflect a positive trajectory toward comprehensive development in Fiji, empowering local communities and enhancing their governance capabilities.
In light of this, there is hope that these initiatives will not only sustain but also enhance the quality of life for the iTaukei communities, fostering a sense of pride and resilience in their identity and leadership.
