Empowering Leadership: Meet the Fijian Trailblazer Making Waves in Washington

Deborah Selenia Vasuilakeba, a 17-year-old from Namata Village in Tailevu, is making waves as the Associated Student Body president at Everett High School in Washington, U.S. With around 1,600 students in grades 9 to 12, her leadership has become a source of pride for her family, who remain in Fiji while she is cared for by her aunt and uncle in the U.S.

Deborah was inspired to run for president by encouragement from her peers and teachers. She expressed surprise at the realization of her impact within the school, especially when she learned of her victory on February 29. Earning the majority of the votes filled her with both joy and nervousness, reinforcing her belief that there is a divine plan for her life.

Although born in the United States, Deborah takes great pride in her Fijian heritage. She has been attending Everett High School since 2021 and was elected to lead the student body on September 4.

Her mother, Ana Gasaucalayawa, describes Deborah as cheerful, confident, and caring, always striving to foster unity among her peers. A talented singer, Deborah has performed the American national anthem at school sports events and special occasions.

Recently, Deborah and her fellow student leaders participated in a leadership camp organized by the school district at Mt Adams, an experience she found transformative. Initially intimidated, she quickly built lasting connections and enjoyed a week of immersive learning without the distraction of technology.

Additionally, Deborah was recognized as one of three Rotary Club of Everett Students of the Month for October, a distinction aimed at celebrating exemplary high school students for their achievements and potential. Her teachers commend her for leading with love and positivity, making her a beloved figure among her classmates.

Deborah shares advice for young people, encouraging them to seek support from those who uplift them and to rely on faith through prayer to find joy in their lives.
