Creating inclusive environments spurs innovation, promotes fairness, and strengthens teams and communities, ultimately enhancing value for organizations. Nitin Gandhi, a director at BRED Bank and chairperson of the South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPX), highlighted this perspective during his address at the TOPEX Conference 2024 held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi on Saturday.
Gandhi emphasized that diversity and inclusion form the cornerstone of a dynamic workplace, where each individual feels appreciated, respected, and empowered to express their true selves. He noted that the benefits of a culture of inclusion go beyond meeting compliance standards and quotas. “At its core, it’s about creating spaces where our teams can deliver their best performance and be their authentic selves,” he remarked.
He stressed the importance of inclusivity not just for the private sector’s success but also for the overall welfare of the economy. Nevertheless, he pointed out that the challenge lies in not just recognizing the need for inclusion but also executing it effectively. This means transitioning from superficial tokenism to genuinely fostering a culture that enhances people’s lives.
Leadership, he argued, plays a pivotal role in nurturing an inclusive environment. It should be an ongoing conversation, with tangible actions taken to ensure that all employees feel a sense of belonging. “Effective leadership in inclusion demands a sincere commitment to empathy and understanding. It involves active listening to those who may not have had the same opportunities and acknowledging that everyone has something valuable to contribute,” Gandhi stated.
He cautioned against leaders who may lack the essential quality of humanity, often confining themselves within corporate norms focused solely on power and control. To achieve genuine inclusion, organizations must integrate diversity and inclusion into their strategic objectives and business plans.
This approach not only promotes a more equitable workplace but also presents a hopeful outlook where the combination of diverse voices leads to innovative ideas and stronger organizational performance. By committing to inclusivity, organizations can cultivate a more dynamic, creative, and resilient workforce ready to meet future challenges.
