On November 30, an important annual general meeting (AGM) will take place in Suva, hosted at the HFC Bank Stadium, a venue well known for sporting events. This meeting will be conducted by Viti Indigenous Tourism Alliance (VITA), an organization dedicated to promoting indigenous tourism in Fiji.

Dr. Apisalome Movono, a research and development officer with VITA, emphasized the uniqueness of this organization, highlighting that it does not solely focus on financial profit but rather aims to support the livelihoods and preservation of indigenous Fijians. Movono stated that VITA’s mission is to empower local communities economically while also safeguarding their heritage and environment.

Speaking about the ongoing challenges faced by local enterprises, he mentioned that some individuals are eager to establish businesses but find themselves constrained by various factors. VITA encourages potential business owners to remain vigilant about the sustainability of the resources afforded to them, as the organization strives to reinforce the cultural identity of the iTaukei people.

Movono noted that the alliance is already seeing progress. Recently, they released the VITA Action Plan 2024-2030 which highlights the importance of ensuring indigenous representation in tourism and encourages collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen the tourism sector, making it more inclusive and resilient.

He also pointed out that VITA’s initiatives are aligned with global standards, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The goals focus on poverty alleviation, economic growth, equitable participation for women, and the sustainability of cultural practices.

In conclusion, the meeting in November will serve as a platform to further discuss these ongoing initiatives and the significant role that the VITA plays in advancing the rights and needs of the iTaukei population. The optimism around this meeting reflects the determination within local communities to foster economic growth while honoring and preserving their rich cultural heritage.

This article underscores the importance of integrating indigenous voices and perspectives into economic development strategies, ensuring that growth benefits the community as a whole. It is a hopeful reminder that initiatives like those of VITA can pave the way for a more equitable and sustainable future for indigenous peoples in Fiji.
