Empowering Health: Key Strategies to Combat HIV Stigma and Transmission

UNAIDS Fiji HIV adviser Renata Ram has highlighted the importance of practicing safe sex to diminish the risk of HIV transmission. Key measures include the consistent use of condoms, avoiding needle sharing, and undergoing regular testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Ram emphasized the significance of being informed about options like pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and the role of community-led initiatives and partnerships in reaching populations most at risk, ensuring that no individuals are overlooked.

She urged people to combat the stigma surrounding HIV by educating themselves and others about the realities of living with the virus. UNAIDS also reminded the public that discrimination against People Living with HIV (PLHIV) is illegal in Fiji, covering areas such as employment, housing, services, access to treatment, and unauthorized disclosure of HIV status.

According to Ram, with appropriate treatment and early diagnosis, HIV can be managed effectively, leading to a healthy and fulfilling life. She advised individuals to engage with healthcare providers to begin or maintain antiretroviral therapy (ART) and seek support from community organizations like FJN+ (Fiji Network of People Living with HIV) or Rainbow Pride Fiji.

Faith-based support is also recognized as a vital source of comfort and guidance in the community. Ram noted that faith-based organizations have recently taken an active role in discussions around HIV, demonstrating that the issue is being prioritized by religious leaders.

Additionally, she stressed the necessity for schools and parents to have open conversations about sexual health, advocating for it to be treated as an essential aspect of overall health and well-being rather than a taboo subject.
