The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, a haven for women cancer survivors, officially opened yesterday in Nabua, marking a vital step forward in offering support to those affected by cancer.

Mereane Vavataga, the CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of this new hub. “It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” Ms. Vavataga stated. “They can come to rest here and find nourishment. It’s a safe space where they can share their experiences and the challenges they face.”

Founded in 2021, the NGO aims to assist women cancer survivors on their spiritual, emotional, and mental healing journeys. Ms. Vavataga explained that twice a year, survivor groups are taken to a hotel to foster relationships and build trust. Following this, the organization conducts a three-week Bible study program that covers spiritual, emotional, and inner healing as well as personal transformation.

Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori, who participated in the opening ceremony, commended the initiative. “Thank you for creating this hub so that individuals can find a safe haven where they can connect with others who care,” he remarked.

Cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her impactful story during the event. “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive,” Ms. Tikoduadua recalled, highlighting the urgent need for support systems like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “I’m truly grateful for this organization because after cancer treatment, it can be a very lonely experience,” she added.

Ms. Vavataga discussed the organization’s future goal of establishing a hospice, stating that this is merely the beginning. The Self Care Retreat Fiji relies heavily on donations and partnerships to maintain its operations. “To fund this building, I even shaved my hair to raise money,” she disclosed, referring to her involvement in the recent ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
